Match the machine to the metal.
Slide to the thickness of the steel on your bench. You get a starting amperage, the wire size, OSHA's minimum lens shade, and the machines whose makers rate them to get there.

Selectors
Two numbers to settle before you buy
Both selectors print their rules and read the same maker ratings as the product pages.
Duty cycle is a share of ten minutes at a stated current: 30% at 90 amps is about three minutes of welding, then seven to cool. Compare it at the amps you'll actually use.

The rating, the conditions, the job
Ratings with their conditions
A duty cycle means nothing without its amperage, and a thickness claim nothing without 'single pass' or 'multi-pass'. Every row keeps the maker's conditions.
Rules you can check
Starting amps follow Miller's 1 amp per 0.001 inch rule; lens shades follow OSHA's minimum table. Both are printed next to every result.
Safety from the source
Fire, fume and eye-protection guidance cites OSHA and points you to the machine's manual. How we read a welder.
